The Montana Dawgs showed up on Facebook as an advertised team in
March of 2021 owned and coached by former
Billings Xtreme player Dedrick
Bergen. Originally thought to be a part of the Rocky Mountain
League, Covid-19 restrictions the previous year had collapsed the
RMFL and most of the Montana-based teams including the Xtreme which
had finished a 9-1 season in 2019 as RMFL Runners-up.
The RMFL returned in 2021 as a pared down five-team league with the
Dawgs listed in the North with the
Helena Guardians, and three Utah-based teams in the South. In a sudden shift, the Dawgs began advertising through Facebook to be a Gridiron Development League team, and the flagship of the Tennesee-based league attempting to expand in the west. A completed GDFL schedule was posted on April 19th. Three scheduled games with the RMFL's Guardians, including two to open the season never came off. An internal split occurred in the Helena franchise as the "Guardians" stopped play after the March 20th game, but a splinter group picked up scheduled games as the "Capital City Cobras" for the next two weeks. One of those weeks would have been against the Dawgs, however the "Cobras" played RMFL foe Summit Valley instead, so it is speculated the shift to the GDFL and the "professional" status being claimed may have been a factor in the RMFL scheduled teams dropping off. No information on players or a roster has been located, however the Facebook entries less than a week prior to the Wasatch Revolution game, themselves playing a hybrid RMFL/GDFL dual-season, presented as the team was still planning to play on May 22. That game was also cancelled as was the rest of the season. Team owner Bergen may have moved on by then and joined the Flathead Monsters in late April. The GDFL would get a two-year foothold in Washington-state from 2022-2023 with the West Sound Rebels making the championship against the Racine Raiders in Wisconsin before being replaced by the West Coast Pacific League in 2024. The east-coast league never found long-term success in the west outside of Southern California and Salt Lake City joining the many attempted "professional developmental" leagues to try and fail over the decades to attract teams in the Greater Northwest region.
