Billed as a national professional team to be coached by former Snohomish
County Viking, Westside Wildcat,
and 8-man league administrator Jim Rice, with help from former
Tacoma Cobras head coach Dave
McEachern, recently with the Idaho Horsemen of the indoor league.
The team website proclaimed that every game would be televised and
every player paid. The initial player roster included photos
of area semi pro players who had taken part in a tryout. 32
teams were claimed to exist, with 19 listed on Facebook pages
however many were just name-only pages on the league website.
Combines were held all across the US dating back to early 2017
charging an unknown fee to players to "fill 53-man rosters".
According to the league website, the season would kick off in April
of 2018. No league schedule was put out, however an online
store with team merchandise and logos was active. Very little
information was available about the founders and management of the
league. The Facebook page stated:
*WHO OWNS THE LEAGUE?*
Many are in question of who is backing the league. Our owners at
this time choose to keep their personal identities private. At the
start of our league, we will not be paying players NFL salaries.
With all due respect, we ARE NOT the NFL but will be NO LESS
professional than the NFL. What we can ASSURE you of is that our
owners are well able to fund the entire league with salaries
offered. We ARE not a charity organization so of course, we must
make money to continue to prosper the league and to raise salaries
eventually and we will"
Incorporation information was shadowy in the beginning as well, but
a former Pennsylvania coach expressed that Nikhial Jackson was
listed as commissioner, and Dr. Salome Winfrey listed as President
and registered agent. Winfrey was also listed with a number of
failed business ventures out of California including a Christian
Academy that closed it's doors in May of 2018 and and Risen
Broadcast Network that was FTB suspended in 2015. The
coach also clamied that Winfrey and Jackson were the same person.
In June 2018 the Templars held a practice after their May 6
combine.
Coach Rice announced via Facebook on June 6:
"Uniforms, gear, and travel will all be supplied in addition to
individual pay AFTER THE GAMES HAVE BEGAN."
An odd statement to say the least.
Ultimately the Templars never materialized, with Coach McEachern
landing with the Washington Warriors
in 2022 when the Covid-19 restrictions finally lifted.
Assistant coach Jamison Rice would land a coaching spot with the
Tulalip Hawks of the Washington State
Football League.
