John Phillips - NWFL Historical Archive

In 1994, frustrated with the non-competitiveness of the Everett Tramps, Tom Fischer and his father Wes, built the Sky Valley Vikings based out of Sultan, Washington.  The original uniforms were from the Cascade Eagles, a one-year venture in the Northwest League during the 1993 season.

The 1997 season saw a name change to the Snohomish County Vikings which Wes and Debbie Fischer would cultivate into a region-wide organization known for numerous community events and charitable activities.

The Vikings finally broke through the playoff barrier in 1998 backing into a spot in the Pacific Football League - North playoffs on the heels of a 3-game skid.  Wes would be named Coach of the Year following the first round exit.

Fischer again was tabbed Coach of the Year in 1999 when the Vikings steamrolled into the playoffs with a 9-1 record, only to come up just short in the NWFL Championship game losing 36-24 to the Puget Sound Jets.  QB Tom Nakane earned NWFL Offensive MVP for 1999.  1999 would prove to be the best season in franchise history and the only 10-win season for the Vikings.

Fischer would again earn Coach of the Year honors in 2006 when he shared the honor with Jaguars coach Jeff Scott.  Place kicker Larry Moody would earn NWFL Special Teams MVP after coming over from the West Sound Saints where he was a 2-time 1st Team All-League selection and Special Teams MVP in 2004.

The Vikings would make their first playoff appearance since 1999 when they earned a spot in the 2007 NWFL Playoffs, but were dispatched rudely by the eventual runner-up Oregon Thunderbolts 51-6.

In 2008 the NWFL had declined to the point where the Vikings joined the upstart Professional Development Football League along with the Oregon Thunderbolts and two new teams, the Tacoma Cobras and Bellingham Blitz for the 2009 season.

In 2010, McAfee created a commercial filmed at Quest Stadium where a number of Vikings players and staff were used as "actors".

The Vikings struggled for 8 months to a 4-9 record and dropped out of the PDFL for 2010.  Starting the season off 2-2 including a win over the PDFL's Thunderbolts, Snohomish canceled a game with Tacoma when word leaked out that the Cobras were in fact paying some players or providing extra benefits, an NCAA violation that could strip eligibility from any players on the Vikings roster looking at college as a future.  Fischer and the Vikings had a long-standing practice of maintaining amateur eligibility for kids who wanted to get to a junior college or the NAIA ranks after being coached up for a year or two after high school.

The NWFL decided to have a final game between the Bengals and Vikings where the winner would be crowned Champion of the 3-team league and the Vikings dispatched Pierce County for the third time of the season to finish 6-3 and give Wes Fischer his first Championship in franchise history.

On June 24, 2017 the Vikings traveled to Grays Harbor with 14 players.  By the end of the game 11 were still able to play in the 93 degree heat.  For player safety the game utilized a running clock and was called in the 3rd quarter.  This proved the end of the Vikings franchise as external pressures of more area teams had sapped the number of players to unsustainable numbers.  For 24-seasons, the Fischers operated the Vikings franchse amassing a 105-157-2 record along with being a beloved community-involved organization raising funds for various charities and causes over the years.

The Vikings name was planned for use again in 2020 by Mike Haggett whose Snohomish County Thunder were looking for an image remake.   The planned "South County Vikings" utilizing the old Vikings inventory of uniforms was thwarted by Covid-19 lockdowns.  The uniforms would be unboxed again in 2025 as Bellingham-based Whatcom Vikings formed and began play in the West Coast Pacific League.
