A name change to subvert "bad" press during the highly competitive early 19-teens, The Seattle Athletic Club came under fire from regional power Multnomah Athletic Club with claims the SAC was using "professional" players and looked to ban the club from "amateur" status under the fledgline AAU governance gaining ground. The SAC became the Washington Park team for the 1912 season and featured Hall of Famer "Nig" Borleske, 5-time letterman from Nebraska Johnny Bender (1900-1904), Chuck Reeves, a 3-year University of Michigan man and Joe "Shorty" Harter, All-Northwest center from Washington State who played under Bender among others. Washington Park entered the December match up with the hated Multnomah squad, both teams loaded up with "ringers", undefeated, tied three times, but found their record blemished in a 15-6 loss. The rematch on New Years Day 1913, saw fists flying on the first play, but would be somewhat of a vindication as the Winged M's were held scoreless in a 0-0 tie to close the season. Borleske, after suffering a concussion in the second quarter, returned just before halftime and later in the fourth quarter, knocked cold two Multnomah players on a punt return. Following the 1912 season, this version of the football team disbanded before reverting back to playing as the Seattle Athletic Club in 1914 but as a shadow of it's former roster. The remaining players would return for the 1913 season only to be blasted by the Bremerton All-Navy team 44-0. Coach Tom McDonald and Guard "Babe" Sample left for Alaska in 1913 to seek their fortunes in gold near Fairbanks. Borleske was banned by the Amateur Athletic Union as a "professional" due to his baseball background in the Western Canada League. He was hired by Whitman College in 1915 where he remained until 1946 winning 17 conference championships in baseball, football and basketball. Johhny Bender, having coached the Washington State College team to a 13-1 record from 1906-1907, returned to Wazzu as coach from 1912-1914 before returning to the midwest to coach the Kansas State Wildcats in 1915.
