Mike Lewin announed the 1936 Guardsmen would be coached by former Uptown Athletic Club head Jimmy Mitchell.  Mitchell would struggle out of the gate to find any offense capable of crossing the goal line.  The Guardsmen also offered up a "B" team that played in the 160-lb league.  After a win-less season, Mitchell was replaced with Lt. B.M. Sanders who engineered an offensive turn around taking the National Guard to the league title game the next season.

Former Foster High star Quentin Biddle led all scoring in 1937 enroute to the Al Rosenburg Trophy as the Community League MVP.  Biddle would win the award a second time in 1938 as the Guardsmen finally captured the league crown after losing in the championship round in '37 to the Ubangi Blackhawks.
