Following the Willamette University loss to the Multnomah Athletic Club
on Christmas Day 1899, H.H. Olinger and other Willamette alums, set out
to form a club team and take on Oregon's best.
1900 Players included: Jarvis (C), Reed (G), Young (T), Fechter (E),
Judd (G), Gault (T), H.H. Olinger (Capt/E), Brace (QB), Robert
Chauncey Bishop (HB), Clarence Morton Bishop (HB), Sanders (FB)
The Statesman Journal ran a series of scathing articles regarding the
"trivial" reasons Multnomah would not play the Capital City club during
November negotiations, including one fiery printing on Dec 10 following
the cancelation of the Dec 7th game which was to be the first of a
3-game set. The call-out ploy worked and the squads met on Dec 15,
playing to a scoreless tie. But the SJ didn't stop there,
pronouncing the "Portland Clubmen Persist in Playing the 'Baby' Act" in
a Dec 30 article. The MAAC and Salem Club would play on New Years,
but because another group was set to play a team of Seattle All-Stars on
the same day, the Winged M's called their team a "junior-team" even
though they were pulling in ringers from Stanford University and the
University of Oregon to play with a split of regular starters. The
snowy result was another scoreless tie.
Salem nearly won outright against Multnomah in the final 2 minutes of
the New Years Day game, when Chauncey Bishop hurdled the Winged M's line
and sprinted the final 10 yards for an apparent touchdown, however
Referee Mitchell claimed MAAC had called time out and Salem disregarded
the whistle. Salem was able to drive to the 5-yard line when play
resumed, but got no closer as time ran out.
Bishop would play the 1902 season with Multnomah before going on
to coach Willamette University.

In November of 1901 C.L. McNary, Harry Albert, F.W. Durbin and H.H.
Olinger were to meet about putting a team on the field. It was
determined if the team was top notch, Christmas Day and New Years Day
would be the only dates accepted to play Portland's best.
In October 1902, the Capital Journal announced the disbandment and sale
of the team equipment. Dr. H.H. Olinger pointed to the fact that
Multnomah among others, refused to schedule games with Salem, and the
team had already defeated every team of consequence in previous seasons.
They had achieved the goal when the team was formed.
