John Phillips - NWFL Historical Archive

In 2000 the Buccaneers were formed when leadership of the Columbia Cougars splintered in three directions.  Multnomah joined the Thunderbolts and Panthers on the Oregon side of the border, as the Cougars and Cavaliers played primarily on the Washington side.  The immediate impact was a Bucs team that would make three straight Northwest Football League championship appearances, breaking through in 2001 as NWFL Champs.

The Willamette Valley Raiders would join the Portland-fray in 2001 and by 2003 the four Portland teams were beating each other up for talent shifting the power of the NWFL back to the Seattle area.

The 2001 team, the best Multnomah put out, started out with just a 3-2 record in June/July and included a forfeit to Bellingham when game officials failed to show up for the game in Portland, making the in-league record for the Bucs 1-3 to start NWFL play as two wins were not counted by the league.  Multnomah would string together 9-consecutive victories with defense leading the way and rematch with the Puget Sound Jets for the NWFL title.  Losing by four points in 2000, the Bucs fought their way into overtime and came away with a 20-14 win and the 2001 trophy.  A month later, the team was back on the field in what was billed as the National Football Alliance Championships.  The Jets were crowed NFA Champions in 2000, and after topping the Raiders 34-30, the Bucs and Jets would square off once again.  Multnomah came away with the 34-23 win setting up a date with the undefeated South Ogden Rhino Raiders out of Utah for the NFA West Championship.  Multnomah won on the road 31-25.  The "National Championship" game was to be played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, however the semi-final round became a problem with Chicago and the Buffalo Gladiators not coming to terms on game location for the Eastern title game.  The National Football Alliance, created by Mike Monahan, general manager of the Columbia Cougars in 2000, collapsed along with the Cougars franchise in late 2001.  The NFA was replaced by National Football Events, led by Jim Nugent out of Illinois for the next 25-years.

The 2002 squad looking for a title defense were soundly defeated in both meetings with the Jets including 48-14 in the third consecutive NWFL Championship game meeting between the two teams.  Multnomah finished 8-2 on the year followed by a 7-3 season in 2003, two losses to the King County Jaguars and once to the rising Eastside Hawks.

The problems for the Bucs began in 2004 with coaching and management changes and the forfeiture of five scheduled games.  The forfeits came down to two in 2005, but players continued to leave the organization.

The team limped through the 2006 season with barely enough players to field a team finishing 1-6.

By 2007, the once proud and dominate team in Portland had slipped to the doormat and an exodus of players forced the team to finally fold up for good at mid-season.  From best to worst, the Bucs won 36 games in their first four seasons and only 8 games in the final four.  The team forfeited a total of 12 scheduled games in it's 8 year history.

Wide Receiver Josh Branch and Athlete Shay Dean are two of the most highly decorated players in Bucs history.  Branch earning All-America honors and Dean earning All-NWFL honors at multiple positions.
