The Story of the F.E.W.

A member of the Archer-Wiggins "Lightweight" division of teams averaging 135-145lbs, F.E.W., created by namesake Frank E. Watkins, was a force for many years in Portland.

The 1911 team was part of a 5-week-long battle with the Portland Mohawks for the Archer-Wiggins League crown.  A tie game at the end of regulation required a replay the following week.  The two teams slugged it out in defensive battles ending in 0-0 ties for four weeks before the Mohawks broke the stalemate kicking a field goal to win the 5th game and league championship 3-0 on Feb 11, 1912.

The 1912 season would kick off eight months later, with F.E.W. returning to the championship game only to fall to Albina 6-0.  The season finale, played on Jan 5, 1913 ended with a loss when Lents' Tead interecepted a pass and broke free for an 85-yard TD jaunt.  Tead nearly had another 100-yard INT return but was called out of bounds at midfield.

The 1913 team finally made it to the top defeating the Albina Juniors over the course of two weeks to claim the Archer-Wiggins silver trophy.  To cap the season, an All-Star aggregation of players from the defeated teams, formed as "Arleta" for a Christmas Day game that Watkins won 7-0.  Quarterback Frank Huelet was also a boxer with the Multnomah Amatuer Athletic Club and was considered a tough athlete to contend with on the field.

In September of 1914 it was announced the Archer-Wiggins champions of 1913 would be rebranded under the Western Amateur Athletic Association with hopes of joining the Pacific Northwest Amatuer Athletic Union and challenge the Multnomah Winged M's.  When that failed to materialize, the team re-entered the Archer Wiggins League in the 145-pound division.

Once again, the team would find itself in a multi-week battle for the league championship with Albina.  After two weeks of scoreless outcomes, Albina again, as in 1912, scored the 6-0 win during the third week to claim the championship away from Coach Warnie Woodworth who had taken his teams to the title game 4 consecutive seasons but only won once with a record of 1-3-7.
