1954 Northwest Player of the Year

Lt. Robert S. Cook

Quarterback

Fort Lewis 44th Division 4x4s

Cook spearheaded a Fort Lewis offense that shut down the Seattle Ramblers that was undefeated just two seasons prior.  The commissioned Lieutenant from Oklahoma City, played his college football at Oklahoma A&M from 1947-1951 earning All-America honorable mention honor and played in the Blue-Gray and North-South All-Star games.

Engineering seven victories during the regular season, the three losses were to the University of Montana and California military base teams including the powerful Hamilton Air Force Defenders and a one-point loss to Fort Ord, Cook and the 4x4s defeated the Seattle Ramblers three times with the third win in the Queen City Bowl giving Fort Lewis it's first and only Queen City Bowl Championship Trophy.

Addendum:  In the movie Pork Chop Hill, Lt. Robert S. Cook, portrayed by actor Leonard Graves, made himself a human bridge for his men to go over him.  Bob served in Korea, Lebanon, and Vietnam, awarded a bronze star and purple heart, retiring as a Lt. Colonel.  He passed away in Tacoma in 1980.
