1936 Northwest Player of the Year

Art Ahonen

Halfback/Quarterback

West Seattle Yellowjackets

The Northwest Championship was claimed once again by the 8-1-1 Yellowjackets, largely on the arm and legs of Art Ahonen.  The former University of Washington All-Coast selection led the league in scoring, running, passing and catching to the tune of 40 points, out-distancing the 2nd highest scorer in the league by 20 points.

Ahonen salvaged a tie against Tacoma, with a scoring pass to Ralph Phelps to even the score at 7-7.  In the Olympia game, Ahonen used his punt return skills to return a Senators punt to the 15 yard line, and on the next play caught a touchdown pass to extend the lead to 12-0.

Ahonen and his teammates accepted the Jack Taylor Championship Trophy as well as their championship sweaters at a banquet a week before Christmas, a fitting end to the '36 season.
